History

The idea for Protection Valley Manor first began on January 14, 1971. This is when Glen Maris called a meeting to sound out the community’s interest in building a skilled nursing home in Protection, Kansas. There was enough interest shown that the second meeting was scheduled for January 18th. At that time a committee of solicitors was appointed to raise $50,000.00 as the community’s share of the financing. Twelve men and two women were chosen for this task.

The money was soon raised, however the Wichita based company was in charge of completing the necessary paperwork, acquisition of land and financing of construction failed to do their part, so plans for the Manor were shelved until other arrangements could be made.

On April 18,1972 the Protection City Council realized the need for the Manor and voted unanimously their intent to issue Industrial Revenue Bonds to finance construction and equipping of the Protection Valley Manor. First Wichita Corporation brought rapid action and the necessary paperwork was soon done.

The Protection Community Development Corporation was organized by Protection residents that had contributed to the original $50,000.00 eighteen months previously. The board was composed of Alfred Zimmerman, President; Ralph Baker, Vice-President; Jay Overocker, Treasure; Juanita Glenn, Secretary; and Atlee Edmonston, Board Member.

Ground breaking ceremonies were held March 11, 1973 and construction began immediately thereafter H.H. Meyer Construction Co. was selected as prime contractor.

Dedication Ceremonies and open house were held January 27, 1974. Protection Valley Manor was issued Intermediate Personal Care Home License No.622 on February 14, 1974 by the Kansas State Board of Health. And Protections’ dreams became reality. Many fine citizens of Protection worked diligently to make the home a success for the past 46 years.

While Rex Maris was the Administrator it was brought to Social Service Designee Ruth Ann Jellison attention by her Social Service Consultant that the home could be a big help to the state mental health program if they would become licensed for 25 Mental Health beds and keep 25 Geriatric Beds. After much thought and discussion with the Board of Directors it was decided that this would be very beneficial to the economy of the home. So we became what were known at the time as a dual facility.

In 2007 with Larry Landers as Administrator of Protection Valley Manor, Larry and some of his staff, and the Board of Directors decided that there was a need for some updates to the building. With this remodel, the addition of the new dining room, enlarged kitchen and some cosmetic work was completed. At this time under the direction of Sandra Cline, Administrator the home continues to thrive and have some updates as needed. We are a 45 bed home at this time.
